The 12x Ballistic Scope is an optical zoom that's excellent for long range targeting, providing approximately 1040% magnification zoom. It's ideal for use in maps ranging from medium to large sizes and is unlockable for all sniper rifles. If you are a DICE employee and you have sufficient privileges, it is automatically unlocked for all weapons that have the option for equipable optics.

If the player stays zoomed too long, the lens will give off a very noticeable glint which will give away the position of the player as with all scopes over 4x magnification.

The SCAR-L has the 12x Ballistic Scope unlocked by default and is the only Assault Rifle that can mount such attachment without being a DICE developer.

Ranging in BF3Edit

The range corresponding to each horizontal tick mark varies depending on the weapon's muzzle velocity, and whether a Suppressor is equipped.

The ends of the tick marks correspond to the lateral distance that an average soldier can run in the time it takes for the round to travel downrange. This allows skilled snipers to provide enough lead on the target.

It is possible to gauge how far away a standing target is from the shooter by fitting the target between tick marks:

Rifles left out of the table have muzzle velocities in between that of the M40A5 and the Mk11 Mod 0, except the QBU-88 that is as fast as the Mk11 and the M39 EMR which are slightly faster.
