"The Axis troops are encamped upriver from the port town of Anzio, 35 miles south of Rome. The town, river and encampment are protected on both sides by steep terrain."

— World War II Anthology Edition Manual

The Battle for Anzio (Italian: Sbarco di Anzio) is a map featured in the Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome expansion. Both teams start with a base that can be captured. One team (Axis) spawns in the railway station and the other (Allies) spawns at the harbor. Both teams have same amount of land, sea and air vehicles. This map features light tanks, jeeps and amphibious boats, which are useful on the rivers.

Conquest[]

"This is a HYBRID CONQUEST map.
Allied troops have made an amphibious landing and control the port town. Axis troops control the encampment upriver. The key to victory in a hybrid conquest scenario is domination; maintain control of more than half the control points on the map the drop your enemies[sic] tickets slowly, or gain control of all the control points to make their tickets drop quickly. WIn the scenario by causing the opponent's tickets to reach zero."

— World War II Anthology Edition Manual

The Allied Base[]

An American control point on the south of the map, to the west of the river. For the Allies it spawns a Priest, a Willy, an M3 Grant, an M3A1 and two stationary Brownings. For the Axis, it spawns a Wespe, a Kübelwagen, a CA M-11/39, a Hanomag and two stationary MG 42.

The Allied harbor[]

An American control point near the Allied Base, to the east of the river. For the Allies it spawns a M3 GMC, an M3 Grant, a Willy, a Mosquito, a Browning, as well as two LCVPs in the river. For the Axis, it will spawn a Sturmgeschütz, a CA M-11/39, a Kübelwagen, a BF-110, an MG 42 and two LCVPs.

In singleplayer it spawns no heavy tank (M3 GMC or Sturmgeschütz), and only one LCVP.

The radar bunker[]

A neutral control point near the center, to the northeast of the river. It starts with two stationary MG 42, and when captured, it spawns a M3 Grant for the Allies, or a CA M-11/39 for the Axis. If the Americans capture this flag and destroy the MG 42, Brownings will spawn in their locations.

The bunker[]

A neutral control point near the center, to the southwest of the river. It starts with two stationary Brownings near the flag, and two AA_Allies guns on the island in the middle of the river. If the Italians capture this flag and destroy the Brownings and anti-aircraft guns, MG 42 and flak38 guns will spawn in their location.

The Axis base[]

An Italian control point on the west of the map, to the south of the river. For the Axis it spawns a Wespe, a Kübelwagen, a CA M-11/39, a Hanomag, two MG 42, as well as an LCVP in the river. For the Allies it spawns a Priest, a Willy, a M3 Grant, an M3A1, two Brownings and an LCVP.

The Axis train station[]

An Italian control point on the west of the map, to the north of the river. For the Axis it spawns a Kübelwagen, a BF-110, a CA M-11/39, a Sturmgeschütz, an MG 42 and an LCVP in the river. For the Allies, it will spawn a Willy, a Mosquito, an M3 Grant, an M3 GMC, a Browning and an LCVP.

In singleplayer the heavy tank (M3 GMC or Sturmgeschütz) will not spawn.

Capture the Flag[]

The layout of control points and vehicles are identical to Conquest. The flags to be captured are at the control points "The Allied Base" and "The Axis base".

Team Deathmatch[]

The layout of control points and vehicles are identical to Conquest, except the control points "The Allied Base" and "The Axis base" are now uncapturable, serving as last resort spawn points.

Outcomes[]

"Anzio was no easy win. Even though there were heavy Allied casualties from the barrage of enemy machine gun and artillery fire, the courage of the Americans ultimately led to victory at Anzio. If it weren't for the armored regiments and the infiltration tactics of the infantry, the plan known as Operation Shingle could have gone the other way. The Italians are now regrouping and establishing a second front on Italian soil."

— American Victory

"Allied command's enthusiasm for this campaign was misplaced-it was too little, too late at Anzio. The Italians had been expecting the invasion for some time and they were too well entrenched for the small Allied force to be effective. Italian artillery kept Allied forces either pinned down alive or face down dead. This is a horrible defeat for the Allies and signals a major setback for the Italian invasion."

— American Defeat

"The Allied force turned out to be no threat to the Italian firepower on the Italian beachhead of Anzio. The Americans severely underestimated the Italian fervor to repel the enemy at any cost. Gaining western footing in Italy would have given the Allied invasion the edge it needed to succeed. Berlin will be pleased to know that Italy is still well under Axis control."

— Italian Victory

"Berlin will not be pleased that the Allies took control of Anzio. Even though the Americans were pinned down on the beach, the determined ground troops somehow found a way to make it up the river. The resilience of the American army was unexpected by the Italian commanders, and Italian soldiers have reaped the consequences. With Anzio, the Americans now have control of an important position on the Italian front."
