Battlefield Series
Talk0this wiki

The Battlefield Series is an award winning series of console and PC games that began with Battlefield 1942. The series is developed by Digital Illusions CE (DICE) and published by Electronic Arts. The games feature a greater focus on large maps and vehicle warfare rather than traditional FPSs. PC games in the series are able to support up to 64 players in one game. Because of Console restrictions, they only allow for 24 player support and in Battlefield 3, have smaller maps then PC. The Battlefield series has sold over 17 million copies as of 2008.
History
Edit
The series originally ran on the Refractor engine and later the Refractor 2 engine, until 2008 with the introduction of the Frostbite Engine in Battlefield: Bad Company although the Refractor is still being used in the free to play PC games of the series. Unlike the Refractor, the Frostbite engine allows for the destructibility of environments. This engine was further improved with the Frostbite 2 in 2011 with the release of the the sequel to Battlefield 2, Battlefield 3, bringing greater graphics, sounds, etc. and a larger scale of destructibility.
Titles in the Battlefield series usually focus on large, online multiplayer battles, with emphasis on piloting a number of vehicles as well as team-based infantry combat and teamwork. Playing in squads has also become a major element for later games in the series.
A kit system has been present within all the Battlefield games. Each kit features a different type of primary weapon along with different equipment, differentiating roles on the battlefield. Since Battlefield 2, all games in the series centrally record online statistics for each player allowing the players to receive rank promotions and weapon unlocks based on their statistics as well as awards such as medals, ribbons and pins. The ability to knife enemies has been present in all Battlefield games. An award of dog tags for each player killed using a knife was added in Battlefield 2142 and a "knifing sequence" was added in Battlefield 3 to replace the standard knife jab.
