Checking Out is the second episode of the single-player campaign of Battlefield Hardline. Still recovering from their last assignment, Nick and Khai begin looking for who has been instigating the drug war in Miami.[1]

Synopsis[]

Still recovering from their last assignment, Captain Dawes assigns Dao and Mendoza to bring in the drug wholesaler Leo "Stingray" Ray for questioning, since he claims to have information about who is instigating the drug war. Going to the location, Khai orders Nick to stay by the interceptor. Leo refuses to go with them, saying he asked for Dawes and insults Khai by mentioning Tyson Latchford, then prepares to leave.

Khai tries to take Leo's bag, but ends up starting a gun standoff between the two factions. During this, unidentified henchman attack, killing Leo's associates, and he flees in his car. Nick and Khai defeat the attacking criminals, then Nick pursues Leo while Khai finds an alternative route. Chasing him through a hotel, Nick kills or arrests criminals and locates him on the upper floor of the hotel lobby, being interrogated by Khai.

Khai is seen beating Leo, punching him and then hitting him in the face with a trash can as Nick stands in shock. Nick intervenes and stops her, reminding her they are surrounded by criminals. Khai helps Leo walk, as Nick takes his bag. After defeating more criminals in the lobby, Nick drives the duo to Dawes' location, ramming through barricades on the bridge on the way.

When they arrive, Dawes becomes furious at Leo's beaten and bloody condition and asks what happened. Nick lies and says that Leo didn't buckle in during the drive. The Captain then asks Mendoza if he will confirm this if asked by anyone else, and Nick agrees. Left befuddled, Nick ask what he just did, and Khai replies that he covered for her, and says that Dawes wanted him on the same page as her.

Trivia[]

  • The hotel's name (The Elmore Plaza Hotel) is probably inspired by the famous Florida crime fiction writer, Elmore Leonard.
  • Soft drink vending machines selling SUN Cola are found throughout the hotel. This fictitious drink brand appeared throughout the Dead Space franchise, which was also produced by Visceral Games.
  • In the underground car-park where Khai and Nick meet Leo is a billboard for "Lars of Sweden". This references Lars Gustavsson of DICE. This is also seen on Bank Job, Downtown, and Black Friday.
  • The hotel concierge's name in some pieces of evidence is Ignacio, a reference to Dino Ignacio, the UI designer for Battlefield Hardline
  • Outside the hotel just out of bounds is a restaurant called Big Eddie Spaghetti. This is a reference to Big Eddie (the ultimate antagonist of the game). Similar shops appear in multiplayer maps Bank Job and Break Pointe, and in the following episode Case Closed.
