For the version in Battlefield 1942, see Coral Sea (Battlefield 1942)

"The battle of the Coral Sea took place in May 1942 and was the first battle in history where aircraft carriers engaged each other directly with fighters."

Coral Sea is a map featured in Battlefield 1943 and is exclusive to the Air Superiority mode. While not originally part of the game, it was later added to each platform when their community reached a collective count of 43,000,000 kills.

Overview[]

The only map in 1943 to feature the Air Superiority gamemode, the objective of each team is to drain the opposing team's ticket count by shooting down other planes or maintaining control of the center flag.

The United States Marine Corps have access to two Yorktown class aircraft carriers, which spawn two F4U Corsairs on each carrier and have two 40mm Bofors anti-air guns at the rear of each carrier. The Imperial Japanese Navy have access to two Shokaku class aircraft carriers, which spawn two A6M Zeros on each carrier and also have two 40mm Bofors anti-air guns at the rear of each carrier.

At the center hill of the map, there is a flag located beside a bunker and radio tower there. The minimap shows players the capture area of this flag. Since the majority of maps are out-of-bounds, players will only have nine seconds until death after bailing out of their airplane.

Entry into the enemy's aircraft carriers is allowed, but players will not gain any points for killing any enemies on board.

Compared to its Battlefield 1942 counterpart, the map has taller islands and an out of bounds zone which emcompanses much of the map when outside of a aircraft. There are several buildings on the islands, and natural bridges that are scattered around the map, all of which map be flown under. All spawn points are four static carriers, two on each side which spawn infinite fighter planes. Each carrier also has access to two 40mm Bofors Anti-Air Guns at the back.

Trivia[]

  • In Battlefield 1943, the Xbox 360 community unlocked the map first shortly after the game's release. The PlayStation 3 community unlocked it a few days later.
