GRU or Glavnoye Razvedyvatel'noye Upravleniye (ГРУ, Главное Разведывательное Управление — Main Intelligence Directorate) is a Russian military intelligence agency subordinate to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (GenShtab) and the Ministry of Defence, as opposed to, consecutively, CheKa, NKVD, KGB, FSB and FSB's foreign division SVR, all non-military. It was formed just before the end of World War One. The agency continued to exist throughout the turbulent times surrounding the Red Revolution, and remains in service to Russia today.
Battlefield 3

The GRU is a playable faction during the campaign of Battlefield 3. Unlike the other factions, it is comprised entirely of three named characters: the playable character, Dmitri Mayakovsky, and his squadmates Kiril and Vladimir.
They are playable during the mission Comrades, where they attempt to stop Solomon's subordinates from detonating a nuclear bomb in Paris, as well as during Kaffarov, chronologically prior to Comrades, where they capture the titular character and learn of the bomb plot. Vladimir is killed during Comrades due to shrapnel, while Dmitri and Kiril likely contract radiation poisoning stemming from the nuclear explosion.
