800px-McDonnell XF-85 Goblin USAF (Cropped)

The Goblin being displayed in the National Museum of the US Air Force.

The F-85 Goblin was a parasite fighter developed for the United States Air Force in the late 1940s after World War II. It was designed to be carried on trapezes in the bomb-bays of specially modified bombers, where it would be lowered down, attached by a hook on the nose, and released. Similarly, it then had to be carefully reattached to trapeze as it had no landing gear. The concept proved difficult, and it was canceled with only two prototypes built. The Goblin had a distinctive egg-like fuselage and a fork-like tail.

Battlefield 1942[]

"The Goblin was designed to be an escort to the allied heavy bombers. Its nimble handling characteristics and powerful machine guns made it a formidable airborne enemy."

— Tooltip, Goblin

"The USAAF developed this compact dynamo as an escort for its long-range bombers, which often faced heavy and lethal harassment by the Luftwaffe. Just 21 feet across its wings and less than 15 feet from nose to tail, this is the smallest jet fighter ever produced. Its small profile and quick speed make it a tough target for anti-aircraft fire and other planes. When you want to lay down some strafing fire and get out in a hurry, the Goblin is your machine."

— World War II Anthology Edition Manual, McDonell F-85 Goblin

The Goblin is a vehicle featured in the Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII expansion for the Allies. It is fast and is able to perform extremely tight turns. Despite this, however, it can also be hard to handle due to its responsiveness to controls.

Great at strafing and destroying other aircraft, it can also be highly effective in the Kamikaze role because of its maneuverability, speed, and responsiveness. Despite these advantages, the Goblin is very frail, and as little as two direct flak hits can destroy it. However, its sheer speed and small size make it incredibly difficult to hit. It can be effectively used at protecting C-47s against Flaks and Wasserfall missiles.
