Guided Rocket is an attack helicopter specialization for Battlefield 3. When equipped, the pilot's rockets become equipped with semi-active guidance systems, increasing accuracy and therefore range of effectiveness. Despite the name, guided rockets do not make use of external laser guidance (e.g. SOFLAM, CITV Station). They make an excellent upgrade for pilots looking for increased ground attack capacities.
To use guided rockets, the player must first unlock the specialization, equip it for Attack Helicopters, then once inside an Attack Helicopter, such as the AH-1Z Viper or the Mi-28 Havoc, aim the cross hair over an enemy vehicle and fire. As long as the cross hair is over the target, the rockets will gently guide themselves towards the target. Without the specialization, the pilot's rockets would simply spread out over distance, reducing accuracy greatly at long distance. The rockets will begin tracking a target 150 meters before impact and will only turn a maximum of 4 degrees.
Guided rockets will not track enemy infantry, only ground vehicles. Guided rockets do not require a lock-on to track enemy vehicles or fire and cannot be countered by IR Smoke, and specializations such as Thermal Camo do not affect the rockets ability to target enemy vehicles. Previously, guided rockets were able to guide themselves towards enemy aircraft, just as with enemy ground vehicles. They no longer target enemy aircraft as of the March patch, version 1.04.
Trivia
Edit
- Guided rockets resemble the gunship rockets from Battlefield 2142, although the weapon in that game only tracked aircraft.
