"A Heavy Barrel gives greater accuracy for aimed fire, but increases the total vertical muzzle climb due to the use of heavy match ammunition. Match Rounds do not increase the overall damage of the weapon."

The Heavy Barrel is a secondary attachment in Battlefield 3 that increases long range accuracy during aimed fire by reducing barrel whip. However, the use of heavy Match Rounds increases the vertical recoil. Match Rounds do not increase the overall damage of the weapon, but does increase the speed of the rounds in certain weapons. Since the March/April patch, heavy barrels increase the maximum range of a weapon by 50% in addition to the increases in aimed accuracy and muzzle velocity, making weapons more effective at medium to long range due to reduced damage drop. The Heavy Barrel also imparts an unaimed (hip) fire penalty to the weapon, making the attachment less suited to close-quarters combat scenarios.
