"American nuclear submarines are lying peacefully in their pens, undergoing repairs at a naval base in the Persian Gulf. Unknown to the elite Navy SEALs guarding the facility, MEC Special Forces are about to begin a nighttime raid to destroy the submarines. Should they succeed, the nuclear catastrophe could mark the beginning of the end for US forces in the Middle East."

Leviathan is a map in Battlefield 2: Special Forces, featuring the United States Navy SEALs defending a nuclear submarine base against MEC Special Forces.

It is one of two maps in Special Forces that are not available in singleplayer, the other being The Iron Gator.

Overview[]

"This is a Conquest: Assault map. The force that causes the opponent's tickets to reach zero wins. The defending force can reduce the attacking force’s tickets gradually by holding all of the control points on the map. The attacking force can gradually reduce the defending force’s tickets by holding all of the control points on the map."

— Game Mode Briefing

On all sizes, this map is an Assault map with the MEC SF as attackers and SEALs as defenders.

A unique feature of this map is the Submarine Pens. There are three in total, and each of them have a bridge that is lowered by default to allow access but can be raised manually with a switch to prevent access. The Submarine Pens are not accessible in the 16-player version. In the 32- and 64-player versions, two of them serve as control points — the southernmost one, called Submarine Pen 1, and the northernmost one, called Submarine Pen 3.

When a Vehicle Drop is called, the SEALs will receive an AIL Raider, while the MEC SF will receive a FAV.

Trivia[]

  • In the “gameplayobjects.con” file, the MECSF main base is actually referred to as “Insurgent_Warehouse.”[1] It is possible that the Insurgent Forces may have originally planned to be in this map.
  • The term Leviathan is a monstrous sea creature symbolizing evil in the Old Testament or a large marine animal.
  • The location of all of the control points on the 16 sized map, except for the MEC Strike Point, are outside the combat area of the 32 sized map. This makes Leviathan the only map in the entire Battlefield 2 series where a significant fighting area on a smaller version of the map would be inaccessible in a larger version.
  • Even outside the combat area of the 64 sized map, there are empty areas with rectangles in a lighter color than the surrounding terrain, and on top of those rectangles, there are smaller, darker rectangles. This suggests that buildings were planned for those areas, and the combat area would have been larger than the release version.
