The M2 Flamethrower is an American made backpack flamethrower that shoots burning jellied petroleum from a gas tank attached to a tube, propelled by nitrogen gas. It was used by American forces by 1943 in World War II and saw service up until 1978 in the Vietnam War.
World War II modEditIn the pre-packaged World War II mod, the M2-2 Flame Thrower is a flamethrower issued to USMC flamethrower kits. The weapon has 100 "rounds" of ammunition, and has no refills in reserve, though it will be automatically refilled when the player is near an Ammunition Box. It has a limited range, and the flames it fires act very similarly to the Napalm of the base game. It is most effective against infantry on ground, as it kills fast and can dispose a group of enemies quickly. It can also be used against enemies in water, though the flames will naturally not settle. The flamethrower can damage vehicles, and is effective against light vehicles like half-tracks and cars. It is not very powerful against tanks, and will mostly result in a waste of ammunition against them.
It is statistically identical to, and the counterpart of, the Type 100 flamethrower.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2: VietnamEdit
— In-game description
In Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam, the Flamethrower is issued to all kits. It has a limited amount of fuel (300 "rounds"), but this allows a continuous spray of fire until it runs out. It doesn't have a reload animation. Any spare gas will be instantly loaded once the reload button is pressed.
Once a player is hit by the Flamethrower, they will be set on fire, which will continue to gradually deal damage for 7 seconds. Players can extinguish the flames with a medkit, by moving into a source of water, or wait seven seconds after which the fire will disappear automatically, though the latter option will cost the player around 50 hitpoints. Players can achieve headshots with the flamethrower, though this does not affect damage, unlike other weapons.
Firing continuously can be effective as it doesn't require a reload and ammo is rarely ever a concern, though it can block the player's view. The Flamethrower is effective for clearing tight and narrow areas, like buildings, bunkers and tunnels, though it has a very limited range, and is unable to engage enemies at long range. The flamethrower's fire takes a rather long time to reach its maximum range, hence it will often be beaten by conventional bullet weapons at medium range.
The flamethrower is a larger threat in hardcore mode, as it takes a very short time to kill, and simply setting an enemy on fire with a single hit will be enough to kill them, granted they do not extinguish the flames beforehand or have Ceramic Body Armor equipped.
- In Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam skill-stars for the M2 Flamethrower are not shown in the in-game stats page but players can still earn them.
- "US ARMY" is written on the M2 Flamethrower, regardless of whether the player using it is in the US Army or North Vietnamese Army.
