"Omaha has its defences built on top of abrupt limestone cliffs, making them very hard to hit. “La Pointe du Hoc” is a heavily defended bunker complex that dominates the beach."

— World War II Anthology Edition Manual

Omaha Beach is a map featured in Battlefield 1942, and is based upon one section of the Normandy landings, which were in turn part of Operation Overlord. Historically, Omaha Beach was one of the most famous of the beaches due to the extremely heavy defenses, failed plans, and the subsequent lack of armored support (due to the failed landings of the armor) for the landing infantry; in spite of overwhelming odds, however, the landing units managed to drive the German defenders away from the coast, and linked up two of the other landing zones; Utah and Gold beaches.

Description[]

"The stage is set for Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy and the beginning of the push toward final victory over Germany. While German headquarters focuses on Calais - thanks in large part to expert diversionary tactics by the Allies - the main invasion force zeroes in on a stretch of Normandy beaches further south, between Cherbourg and Le Havre.

General Eisenhower's order to attack has mobilized an unprecedented military force. About 4,000 ships will deliver over 175,000 men and supplies to the Normandy beaches. As an advanced unit pushes toward Omaha Beach, the men onboard the landing craft know it will not be an easy mission. Even though air strikes have intensified against German coastal defenses, a formidable enemy awaits atop the cliffs."

— American Map Briefing

"This is the day that Berlin has been anticipating. Finally, the Allied Forces are launching a massive attack on the French coast. Berlin had thought this attack would happen near Calais; however, it seems like the enemy's main force is pushing toward beaches further south, between Cherbourg and Le Havre. In the final analysis, it does not matter where the American forces come ashore. German defenses will cut the enemy down wherever they land.

On a bluff overlooking the beach, German soldiers stand ready to hold the enemy back from the first line of bunkers. In the unlikely case that the Americans should overrun these positions, German soldiers will fall back to the nearby villages to re-group and repel the enemy."

Conquest[]

"The German defenses are strong. A determined attack will allow us to get off of the beach. If we can take all of their outposts we will have won this battle."

— American campaign briefing

"The Allied invasion is here! Hold them off of the beaches and maintain control of all the outposts to defeat this attack."

— German campaign briefing

BF1942 Omaha Beach campaign

Campaign briefing

US forces begin the map on a ship out at sea. On the beach lies a flag, unowned at the start of the map (this is unique, however. It can only be captured by the Allies). Up on the cliffs at the head of the beach is a German fortified position, behind which is a German garrison. The Allies have to land on the beach then push inland.

Bases[]

Allied Fleet[]

The Allies start out with a Fletcher-2 destroyer, armed with heavy guns which can be manned and fired. It also spawns landing craft, which are used to land on the shore.

Omaha Beach[]

The first Allied objective is the landing beach, and can only be taken by them. This flag will spawn a Sherman and a Willys MB. The beach itself provides little cover apart from static destroyed landing craft and some beach obstacles. There are two routes up to the second base, each at opposing sides of the beach, there is then only a single way up to the third base, a road on the west side of the 2nd level garrison that arcs east at the top of the map.

In singleplayer no vehicles will spawn.

German Fortified Positions[]

A bunker system featuring machine gun emplacements and a tank spawn. This is one of two initially Axis controlled bases. In spite of the appearance of a number of MG42 machineguns, the AI will rarely use them effectively, and occasionally the weapons will go unused altogether.

In singleplayer, the flagpole has been moved to lower ground on the bunker structure to allow bot access.

German Garrison[]

The Axis fallback base, it spawns a tank and an APC. If the Allies capture this base, the Axis will start losing tickets at a fast rate and eventually lose. It also has a Defgun at the top, and many houses lined on 2 streets.

Team Deathmatch[]

The layout of the control points and vehicles is almost the same, with a few differences:

  • Omaha Beach now starts under the Allies, and is uncapturable as a last resort spawn point in case the fleet gets destroyed.
  • German Garrison remains under Axis control, but is now also uncapturable for the same reason.
  • German Fortified Positions now starts neutral.

Outcomes[]

"It was a gruesome scene at Omaha Beach. German gun emplacements destroyed a large number of assault vehicles as they approached the beach. Then, the snipers continued the massacre, picking off soldiers as they waded toward shore. In spite of the monumental losses, US forces eventually secured the beachhead. This hard-fought victory will never be forgotten by the troops who refused to stop until they seized Omaha Beach."

— American Victory

"This bloody defeat at Omaha Beach will never be forgotten by troops who survived the massacre. According to firsthand accounts by survivors, Allied troops never had a chance against the well-placed and heavily defended German gun emplacements overlooking the cliffs."

— American Defeat

"By defeating the Allied invasion at Omaha Beach, Germany stopped the enemy from taking a key beachhead. There is no time for celebration, however. Much more needs to be done. With the enemy coming ashore at other points in Normandy, it'll take many more victories like this to stop them from thinking they can gain victory over the Third Reich."

— German Victory

"Germany has paid a heavy price for losing control of this beach, and the price is likely to get higher as enemy forces push into France. Soldiers retreating from Normandy must now regroup as they fall back and offer any resistance they can against the invading army. Seeing the momentum gained by the Allies, German soldiers will be hard-pressed to mount much of a counter-offensive at this point."

Trivia[]

  • Omaha Beach was the highest voted map to be remade in Battlefield 4 in a poll by DICE LA to bring a remade map to the game, beating Wake Island by approximately 250 votes. Despite this, however, it was ultimately decided that Dragon Valley would be selected despite not winning the poll.[1]
