"February 7, 1965 - After attacks on U.S. bases, President Johnson orders airstrikes against barracks near Dong Hoi. Operation Flaming Dart I and Flaming Dart II were meant as a message to the North to cease hostilities in the South. In February of 1965, the U.S. Airforce and Vietnam Air Force dropped massive amounts of bombs and on the first day alone, dropped 25 tons in 30 minutes."

— Map Briefing

Operation Flaming Dart is a map featured in Battlefield Vietnam. It is loosely based on the real Operation Flaming Dart I, which was a U.S Air Force and Vietnam Air Force military operation which escalated the Vietnam War after several attacks on U.S. bases by the Vietcong.

Conquest[]

"Operation Flaming Dart is a Mission Map. Airbases cannot be captured. Teams can eliminate the usefulness of an airbase by destroying its control tower. Once a control tower is destroyed, it does not return thereby eliminating the resupply of vehicles and soldiers at those bases. The team that controls the majority of active control points on the map will cause the opposing team to constantly lose tickets."

— Map Briefing

Operation Flaming Dart can be considered an attempted Amphibious Assault map, as the VNAF are attempting a Sea and Air map, and they have mostly Air/Sea support (and tank support once they capture the mainland). While the NVA has mostly Tank superiority (alongside Mobile AA), the South Vietnamese have a numerical advantage in the Air.

Control towers are a unique feature of this map. They provide spawn points and vehicles, but they can also be destroyed by the enemy team. Once a control tower is destroyed, existing aircraft can no longer repair and resupply at the location associated with the control tower. In addition, the spawn points associated will be removed, and any vehicles which have never been used will be destroyed given sufficient time.

A team to hold all three control points will inflict a ticket bleed on the opposing team. The VNAF start with a ticket bleed as the NVA starts with all three control points.

Trivia[]

  • In the release version of Battlefield Vietnam, air towers were more vulnerable to explosives and mortar attacks. This was changed with patch 1.1.
  • It is likely that another U.S.-aligned faction was intended for this map, before being replaced by the A.R.V.N.:
    • In singleplayer, control points held by the A.R.V.N. would fly the U.S. flag, though this has been fixed in co-op.
    • Furthermore, in the cut Challenge mode, there would have been two missions based on this map, and the briefing for one of them would mention "U.S. pilots", while all other maps featuring the A.R.V.N. would mention them accurately.
