The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was an American long-range single-seat World War II fighter aircraft conceived, designed and built by North American Aviation (NAA).

Battlefield 1942[]

The Mustang is a vehicle featured in Battlefield 1942 and is the United States Army's main fighter aircraft. It has space for one player, who pilots the aircraft. It has two weapons available, its machine guns with 900 rounds of ammunition, and single bombs, with 15 units available. It spawns along with the B-17 Flying Fortress on many bases. It is replaced by the F4U Corsair on Pacific maps.

As with other fighter aircraft, the P-51 main role is mostly to support ground troops and to hunt enemy fighters and bombers. Its machine guns are very effective against lighter targets, such as aircraft and cars, and its single bomb can aid greatly in destroying enemy armor.

A bomb is also efficient against emplacements, as a single well-placed bomb can destroy any anti-aircraft gun, defgun or heavy machine gun position. The P-51 is especially fast and maneuverable, which makes it the optimal choice for dogfighting compared to other allied craft.

The Mustang's prime weakness is its weak armor. Anti-aircraft guns rip through it in just a few shots. The Mustang requires a certain degree of skill to use effectively.

It is a direct equivalent to the Imperial Japanese Navy's A6M Zero, Red Army's Yak-9, British Army's Spitfire and the Wehrmacht's Bf 109.

Battlefield V[]

The P51 is an aircraft featured in Battlefield V that was introduced in the 2020 Summer Update. It is a fighter used by the USA faction on European and North African maps, whereas the Corsair F4U appears on Pacific Maps. The German equivalent of the P51 is the Bf 109.

Two variants of the P-51 are available, the P51D and P51K.

P51K[]

The P51K Fighter is the bomb-equipped version of the P51, equivalent to the Bf 109 G-2. Its standard loadout of two .30cal Browning machine guns and two 20mm Hispano autocannons allow the aircraft to engage a variety of aerial targets, while its bombload of two 250lb bombs is similarly versatile if otherwise unremarkable.

The vehicle's specialization tree, which shares many similarities with that of the Corsair F4U-1A, can help to boost air-to-air or air-to-ground performance in many areas. For armament, a 100% increase in the number of LMGs and cannons are available at Rank 1, with anti-infantry HE shells available for the latter at Rank 2. A unique upgrade, the 4x LMG No Tracer, replaces the cannon with a second set of light machine guns that shoot projectiles that are largely invisible in flight - useful for obfuscating the pilot's position during dogfights. The bombs can be replaced with either larger 500lb AN-M64 general purpose muntions, or 250lb incendiaries for area denial purposes - accuracy during bomb runs can be improved with the model specific Dive Brakes specialization. Tertiary weapons come in the form of AT Mines, a parachute Spawn Beacon, or the unique AN-M40 Parafrag Bombs which are the US equivalent of the German Butterfly Bomb. Spotting equipment comes in the form of Flares, which replace the default Emergency Repair, and a Rank 6 Radar Package.

P51D[]

The P51D Fighter is a rocket-armed, dedicated dogfighter of the US faction, equivalent to the Bf 109 G-6 and similar to the Corsair F4U-1C. Its standard equipment of 4x .50cal Browning machine guns can inflict very high damage per second against enemy aircraft especially fighters, although the initial lack of a secondary weapon means pilots should be aware of overheating. The 4x 3-inch FFARs can be useful for engaging light ground targets, but also as a means of inflicting burst damage against aircraft.

Much of the P51D's Specializations tree is dedicated to improving its air-to-air potential while also expanding the variety of targets it can reliably attack. Its main gun loadout can be expanded with an additional two .50cals, or its secondary armament developed with either two 20mm Cannons (with Rank 3 High Explosive shells) or two stealth No Tracer .50cals. The 4x 3-inch FFARs can be swapped out for a variety of munitions, including more FFARs for greater spread, M8 rockets for demolition and anti-infantry duties, or 5-inch FFARs for attacks on heavy armor. Unique to this variant are the Manual Supercharger, Spotting Scope, and Deploy Supplies upgrades.
