The RPD in real life

The RPD (Russian: Ruchnoy Pulemyot Degtyaryova, English: Hand-Held Machine Gun of Degytyaryov) is a Soviet light machine gun designed by Vasily Degtyaryov in 1944. It was meant to replace the DP Machine Gun used by the Red Army during WWII, but it only saw extensive production in the early 1950s. Then, as with many Soviet weapons, RPDs were sold to, and soon manufactured in, many mutually communist countries such as China, North Korea and Vietnam.

Battlefield Vietnam

In Battlefield Vietnam, the RPD is issued uniquely to the NVA Assault kit. It has a 100 round capacity, high recoil, high damage and low accuracy. It can kill in 2-3 shots, and so can be very reliable in close quarters combat, but is essentially a support weapon due to its high damage and capacity. When standing up, the RPD has extremely high recoil, so going prone is necessary for targets anywhere beyond 5 meters away. Going prone will eliminate almost all recoil, but the accuracy will still deteriorate.
