A serrated or sawback bayonet was a weapon used by armies from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s. Unlike common bayonets, saw teeth were filed into the spine of the blade. The serrated bayonet found use among combat engineers, who might have used the weapon to saw wooden material. It was also provided to German noncommissioned officers.

The Hague Conventions forbade weapons that caused grievous injury, such as the serrated bayonet, although some signatories continued to use the weapon through to World War II.[1]

Battlefield 1[]

"Some knives during WW1 were serrated, but were frowned upon by most parties since they caused wounds that were very hard to treat."

— In-game description

The Sawtooth Knife is a bladed melee weapon in Battlefield 1. It is unlocked by finding five puzzle pieces in Battlepacks and building it in the Customization menu.

Unlike the normal range of knives available, the sawtooth knife behaves more like the Cavalry Sword, including its use of takedown animations borrowed from the hand tools.

Trivia[]

  • The Sawtooth knife depicted in Battlefield 1 appears to be a German design, with added "knuckle duster" guards from a U.S. trench knife.
