Top Man is the fourteenth mission in the singleplayer campaign of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat.
According to the decoded intel that you secured in your last mission, the Chinese are planning something big. There's a highly valued commander set up in a camp on top of the plateau. A straight drop will be fatal; their Stingers'll blow us apart. We're going to need to fly low into a safe drop zone in the canyon and take out the Stingers on the way up to clear the way for air support. Whatever happens, your target will neither escape nor survive.
In this mission, the player plays from the viewpoint of NATO, tasked with eliminating a PLA commander in the region. The player must fly a UH60 Black Hawk with four other Spec Ops soldiers to a PLA base on a plateau on cliffs guarded by anti-aircraft artillery that will attack and destroy the helicopter if it is flown too high. The helicopter must clear a safe landing zone before proceeding up the cliffs. The cliffs are heavily guarded by Type 85 HMGs. After clearing all the PLA soldiers, a Chinese WZ-9 helicopter will attack the soldiers. Using the Stingers the player can destroy it. The player then links up with NATO paratroopers landing at a deserted base. Across the canyon is the PLA base. NATO jets will then cut the rope bridge connecting the two cliffs. The player must shoot the radio mast at the base, causing it to fall across the canyon and bridge the gap. However, when the player proceeds to the base, the commander will fly away in a helicopter. The player must either Hot-Swap to a NATO Black Hawk or use the Stingers to down the aircraft. When the helicopter is destroyed, the mission is complete.
To achieve a full 10-star rating, the player will need to complete the following milestones by the end of the mission:
- Score: 120,000 points or more
- Time: Completion in under nine minutes
- Style/Weapon Use (amount of hot-swapping): Expert (about 10 hot-swaps)
- Accuracy: Greater than 25% shots hit
- Losses: Less than 15 soldiers on the player's team died
